Good Evening! I hope you all are enjoying your Sunday. We had planned to drive up to Orlando for the day, but based on the predicted weather up there we thought it best to stay local. We both love animals, so Jeremy suggested we head to the zoo since we hadn’t been there in a while.

It was a little more expensive than the last time we had been there – $24.99 per adult. However, they have a summer promo going on that allows you unlimited admission through September 1, so not so bad after all. They do offer teacher discounts, but only on the annual membership.

It was a little hot today, but not too bad if you kept moving. However, I was interested in capturing some great photos to share with all of you which caused quite a bit of stopping along the trail. I did make sure to load up on sunscreen before we left and had my sunglasses on anytime my face wasn’t behind the camera. We spend a lot of time out in the sun, which has generated our obsession with Columbia brand clothing. I had my Trail II Knee Pant while Jeremy had his standard gear on, a PFG long-sleeve shirt and shorts and a ball cap style hat.

We love that all of the Columbia items we purchase have built in UPF 50. Although when it comes to visiting the animals, I do love it when Jeremy wears his camo safari hat, which makes him look like a tour guide.

We arrived to the zoo around 10:30am. We took our time going to each exhibit, keeping the outing at a relaxed walking pace. The property is set up in a circular pattern, divided into 4 main sections: Florida Wetlands, Tropics of the Americas, Asia, and The Islands. Traveling counter clockwise, it took us about two hours to complete the circuit. I liked that they had water fountains throughout the area, so I didn’t have to worry about carrying a water bottle (which I almost always have with me wherever we go). They have one main restaurant, located within the Tropics of the Americas, that has both indoor and outdoor seating, but we did not dine there since we ate before we arrived.

Check out our gallery of pics below and stay tuned for a video coming soon.

Area #1: Florida Wetlands

Although you may initially be greeted by a pungent aroma, wishing you had some Poo-Pourri handy, the beautiful shades of pink in these flamingos are worth taking a few minutes to stop and admire. The sun made them look extra stunning today.

A quiet moment

This area is also home to some playful otters, lazy black bears, and poised Florida panthers – “Sassy” and “Micco”, all of which were not in good positions this morning for clear photos. Some of the other inhabitants were more cooperative and photogenic- the bald eagle, alligator, and turtles.

Area #2: Tropics of the Americas

Macaws
Jaguar
Anteater
Capuchin Monkey

The Capuchin Monkey definitely had the best personality of them all! I captured quite a few funny looks from him. I feel like one or two of them belong in the What do you Meme? deck.

Area #3: Asia

Sadly, many of these animals were not out and about, or were behind fences that did not allow for in-focus shots.

Area #4: The Islands

Koalas
Servals
Yellow-necked Toucan

We wrapped up our visit with a stop at Lorikeet Loft. This is a walk-through aviary where you can choose to purchase a small cup of food for $2 to increase your chances of a close encounter. The birds had just been fed their lunch so we decided just to walk through. They were very inquisitive and boisterous, and despite not having any food to entice them with, we still got to get some contact time with them. Especially since Jeremy claims he is a “bird whisperer”.

We would recommend this as a great date spot! In fact, our very first entire day we spent together was at another zoo in Miami. There is a whole other story to that day that involves giraffes. Perhaps we will have to recreate that trip one day this summer. We hope you enjoyed our zoo review. Please share your comments for requests of what other animal adventures you’d like to hear about.
